Oxford Entrepreneurs’ President - Rajeeb Dey - met FT journalist Richard Donkin at the Enterprise Culture Policy Retreat, an event run by the HM Treasury and the Small Business Service. In Richard’s article discussing the changing attitude among young people to ‘traditional corporate life’, Raj argues that inadequate support is extended to graduates to help them set up their own enterprises. Duncan Bannatyne, entrepreneur and one of the dragons from the BBC’s Dragons’ Den was interviewed alongside our very own President, Rajeeb, on BBC Radio Oxford. Raj commented that programmes such as Dragon’s Den have helped increased young people’s awareness of entrepreneurship as a viable ‘career path’ and shared his experiences as a young entrepreneur with the listeners.
Last Tuesday saw the successful launch of our exciting new Start A Company Scheme. Following an honest and inspirational talk from Darius Norell, Founder of Real World Magazine, attendees were more than ready to generate a staggering number of ideas of their own.
The atmosphere electrified with enthusiasm as guests finally found an opportunity to share their thoughts over a free buffet. One OE member described the evening as ‘a well-run and motivating festival of ideas’.
We hope to build on this initial positivity, and will look forward to watching the teams develop and progress at future SAC events.
The OE stall at the 2006 Fresher’s Fair will surely go down in history as one of the most successful ever – over 1000 new members are welcomed to the society as a result. This means we are now truly one of the largest societies in Oxford , and as ever we remain the largest FREE society. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who signed up, and to warmly invite them to all current and future OE events. It was a pleasure to meet some of you at the OE Freshers’ Fiesta at Escape.
Boso (Buy Or Sell Online), the student start-up of OE members Harjeet and Kulveer Taggar reached a national audience with coverage on Channel 4’s Tricky Business. The program followed the pair in Boso’s early days; in their online blog at www.boso.com/blog, Kulveer is keen to point out that the company is now going strong. They managed to secure the necessary level of angel investment, have Evan Williams (founder of odeo.com) on the board, and are benefiting from constantly growing site traffic.
The Oxford Entrepreneurs Committee were delighted to find out that two of its Committee members - Kirill & Harj - were among the seven finalists in the National Graduate of the Year Competition, run by PriceWaterHouseCoopers and the careers advisory magazine, Real World.Kirill went on to win the competition overall which was a testament to his hard work with OE and his many other endeavours.
