Leaving Cambridge in the 70’s with a law degree and no idea of what to do, Dinesh Dhamija eventually landed a job with IBM. However, working for someone else was not all it was cracked up to be and Dinesh soon realised that the taxman was getting more of this salary than he was.
In 1980 Dinesh and his wife opened up a kiosk selling flights in Earl’s Court Road Tube station. This travel business did well, but things for Dinesh really took off in the mid 90s when a German friend introduced him to something called the “Internet”. In 1999 ebookers was formed and today it is one of Europe’s entrepreneurial success stories, listed on the London Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. It has sales of over £500m, websites in 13 countries, an outsourced facility in India and even bigger ambitions for the future. Dinesh was recently voted Entrepreneur of the Year by the prestigious Management Today magazine.
